Project for remodelling the Plaza Mayor square in Cáceres
Cáceres was declared a World Heritage site by the UNESCO in 1986 thanks to its vast wealth of monuments. Due to its irregular layout and the fact it is built on a slope, the Plaza Mayor square, unlike others from the same period, has undergone several remodelling projects throughout its history. The last of these was undertaken to support Cáceres' candidacy for the 2016 European Capital of Culture, in which Prointec participated by developing the project and managing the works. The main aim of the remodelling was to reclaim this space as a place for social and cultural interaction, combining traditional elements with all the latest technologies.
One of the measures commissioned by the municipal government was the pedestrianisation of the square. Before the works, over 2,000 vehicles passed through this space every day, posing serious limitations for its use by pedestrians and causing its progressive deterioration in certain areas as a result.
Prointec designed mobility studies and a new plan for motorised traffic and parking policies. The project sought to recapture the traditional atmosphere of a Mediterranean square as a place for communal living, and encouraged the recovery of a range of activities such as trade, outdoor terraces, more secluded recreational spaces, shaded areas, zones for music, and more. While maintaining the spirit of the square, the latest technology was used to offer city dwellers comfort and convenience and to allow major events to be staged without creating a major impact.
