Drafting of the urban renewal plan for the neighbourhoods of Polana Caniço A and B in the city of Maputo, Mozambique
The neighbourhoods of Polana Caniço A and B are located in the city of Maputo in Mozambique. The territory is currently in an extremely precarious position both socially and economically and in terms of infrastructure provision, as it suffers from high rates of unemployment and illiteracy, an informal economy, and hydrogeological and sanitary hazards due to the lack of water supply and sanitation. However, it also offers significant opportunities for development thanks to its central location in the city, its predominantly young population, and its natural and scenic values.
When drafting the urban planning plan for these neighbourhoods, which have a total area of 670 hectares, Prointec opted for a multidisciplinary approach to combine technical, social, cultural and economic aspects, in addition to an important process of citizen participation. This all resulted in a town planning proposal that meets the basic needs of the population in terms of equipment, infrastructures and the organisation of public spaces to regenerate and enhance the zone.
