Development and maintenance of an integrated road safety system for the Spanish Highways Department
Since 1994, the Ministry of Public Works has entrusted the analysis of the accident rate on the Spanish road network to Prointec, along with the development and maintenance of the integrated road safety system for its Highways Department.
The work carried out by Prointec over this period has involved the continuous improvement of the integrated road safety system and its progressive adaptation to the new technical advances, and improvements in the safety of road infrastructures, in order to steer public sector activity towards a more efficient operation of the resources.
The works developed by the company took the form of a road safety management system, following the procedures in Directive 2008/96/EC on the management of safety in road infrastructures, which allows the regular analysis and monitoring of the accident rate, the identification of specific safety problems and deficiencies, and the definition of possible actions to improve the infrastructure. It also includes a specific training programme in the techniques and methodologies applied to ensure maximum quality and efficiency of the actions to be developed in the area of infrastructures.
The system described is fed by a web-based IT platform developed ad hoc by Prointec with GIS geographic information that integrates all the databases on accident rates, traffic, actions and accident blackspots.
