Road safety in the road network in Ecuador

Road safety audits on the road network in Ecuador

In 2013 Prointec was selected by the Ministry of Public Works in Ecuador to carry out road safety audits in regions 5 and 6 of the country's road network. Both regions together account for more than 3,000 km of roads that must be inspected and analysed. Región 5 comprises the provinces of Los Rios, Guayas, Santa Elena, Galápagos and Bolivar, and Region 6 includes the provinces of Cañar, Azuay and Morona.

The technical auditing works carried out by Prointec consist of the detailed, exhaustive and critical review of the physical condition of the roads in the region selected to identify deficiencies and possible improvements to increase road safety.

The company’s team of auditors carried out the works in the following phases:

  • Previous desk research: Compilation and analysis of the available information and preparation of verification lists (criteria and fields)
  • Data collection and processing: review of the roads, data acquisition on the terrain and subsequent analysis of the information. This was done by generating a georeferenced database using GIS technology, for each type of deficiency identified in the roads.
  • Results and conclusions: identification of elements and designs representing a hazard for traffic safety, and subsequent recommendations for actions for improvement, with their evaluation and prioritisation.
  • Drafting of the audit report describing all the works in detail.

Prointec has carried out works similar to those described in Uruguay, Romania, Portugal, Bolivia, Egypt, Mexico and Colombia.
